Veterans Garden Therapy Project The training programs provide veterans who are receiving services through the va with compensated work therapy, providing them with meaningful employment, an opportunity to learn new & transferrable skills while gaining a comprehensive understanding of urban agriculture. At the veteran’s garden on the west la va campus, getting your hands in the dirt is a therapeutic exercise. after a hiatus, the blossoming space is coming back to life as a healing tool and nutritional resource for veterans. As veterans transition back to civilian life and or recover from traumatic injuries, the therapeutic nature of gardening or beekeeping can provide a sense of purpose, community, and healing. what can gardening do for you? gardening has been shown to significantly reduce stress levels and symptoms of anxiety and depression. The va whole health department, inspired by the positive impact the garden has had on veteran volunteers, aims to establish agricultural therapy programs and career training for those interested in agriculture.

Through innovative programs, we empower veterans to heal, grow, and thrive. creating therapeutic gardening spaces for veterans, fostering mindfulness, mental health, and a sense of community. how it works: veterans work together to build and maintain community gardens. Our garden was started by one homeless veteran in 2012 who was growing watermelons in a field of trash between abandoned military barracks set for demolition. the shelter is set in industrial west long beach between two oil refineries. The goal is to combat stress through horticultural therapy activities – growing fruit and vegetables – in a walled garden setting, where people feel safe and protected. the program has been developed in accordance with plans by combat stress (ex services mental welfare society).
